What is Kava?
Execution environments
Kava's co-chain architecture connects a Cosmos SDK environment with an Ethereum Virtual Machine environment. Solidity applications can deploy through its Ethereum-compatible interfaces. Cosmos modules provide functions such as staking, governance and interchain transfers. Kava's EVM support became operational with the Kava 10 upgrade. Applications include lending markets, decentralized exchanges and liquidity-management protocols.
Security and token roles
Tendermint consensus coordinates validators with bonded KAVA. Tokenholders can delegate KAVA to validators and participate in staking rewards. Validator faults can trigger slashing under the network's rules. KAVA pays transaction fees on both the Cosmos and EVM sides. Holders also vote on protocol parameters and decisions about community funds.
Issuance policy
The Kava 15 upgrade changed the network's monetary policy at the end of 2023. Its zero-inflation design stopped the previous creation of KAVA through inflation. Staking distributions instead draw on community-pool resources and the network's funding arrangements. Transactions continue to generate fees independently of new coin issuance. Governance determines how relevant community allocations are used. The native KAVA balance can also be represented in the EVM environment for contract interactions.
