What is Kinesis Gold?
Gold ownership
Kinesis was founded by Thomas Coughlin to connect physical precious metals with digital transfers. Its KAU unit corresponds to one fine gram of allocated gold with a minimum fineness of 999.9. Kinesis Cayman issues the native asset under the platform's gold ownership framework. The backing is physical bullion held in vaults rather than a derivative tracking the gold price.
Ledger and representations
Native KAU runs on Kinesis's own blockchain, which uses a modified Stellar codebase. Transfers update balances on that ledger without moving the bullion between vaults. An Ethereum ERC-20 representation is issued separately by KMS Labs. That representation is backed by native KAU held in reserve, giving it an additional conversion layer before physical redemption.
Issuance and redemption
KAU enters circulation when bullion is accepted into the system and corresponding units are released from the issuance accounts. Redemption removes the relevant units from circulation. On the native ledger, this is handled through treasury accounting rather than destruction by a conventional token burn function. Physical delivery is available subject to verification, redemption requirements and charges. The published minimum gold redemption is 100 grams.
Custody and use
The platform's vault network holds insured bullion on behalf of its legal owners. Independent inspections reconcile physical holdings, weight and fineness with the platform's records. KAU can be transferred, traded or spent through supported Kinesis services. Eligible verified accounts can also receive distributions funded by platform transaction fees. Those distributions depend on fee generation and program eligibility rather than interest produced by the gold itself.
