What is LayerZero?
Origins and messaging
LayerZero was developed by Bryan Pellegrino, Ryan Zarick and Caleb Banister. Its original interoperability paper was published in 2021. ZRO launched in June 2024. LayerZero endpoints provide a shared interface for applications on different chains. Developers configure the security requirements used to verify their cross-chain messages.
Verification and execution
Decentralized Verifier Networks verify messages against the application's chosen configuration. Executors handle delivery and execution on the destination chain. The protocol separates these functions rather than requiring every application to use one validator set. Omnichain Fungible Tokens use this messaging infrastructure for token movement across networks. Stargate provides an application for cross-chain transfers and swaps built on LayerZero.
Supply and token economics
ZRO has a total supply of one billion tokens. Allocations include the Foundation, strategic partners and core contributors, with vesting affecting circulating supply. Holders participate in referendums on activating the protocol fee switch. An activated switch would fund ZRO purchases and burns from additional protocol fees. Since April 2026, all Stargate revenue has been directed to ZRO buybacks under the project's published revenue model.
