What is Litecoin?
Launch and monetary rules
Charlie Lee launched Litecoin in October 2011 using a codebase derived from Bitcoin. Its target interval is approximately two and a half minutes between blocks. The mining subsidy halves every 840,000 blocks. The maximum issuance is 84 million LTC. These parameters create a different payment and issuance schedule from Bitcoin's.
Mining and transfers
Litecoin miners perform Scrypt proof of work to produce valid blocks. Full nodes check those blocks and their transactions against consensus rules. Its ledger records spendable outputs rather than account balances. LTC is transferred between addresses and pays transaction fees. Scrypt mining can also secure Dogecoin through merged mining.
Transaction features
Litecoin supports Segregated Witness, separating signature data from the base transaction format. The network also supports Taproot spending rules. Mimblewimble Extension Blocks activated in May 2022. This optional transaction layer conceals transferred amounts within its extension-block system. Users can move LTC between the conventional ledger and that privacy-oriented layer.
