What is Maker?
Overview
Maker provides a transparent stablecoin system built on blockchain infrastructure. Dai is designed for payments, savings, and collateral use, offering traders a stable alternative to volatile cryptocurrencies without reliance on legal systems or trusted intermediaries. MKR holders participate in decentralized governance through continuous approval voting, aligning their incentives with protocol health.
How it works
MKR is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, also deployed on Polygon and Avalanche. The token cannot be mined; instead it is created and destroyed in response to Dai price movements to maintain stability. MKR functions as both a governance token and a fee mechanism within the Maker protocol.
Peg and backing
Dai maintains a peg to the US dollar through collateralization and dynamic token supply adjustments. MKR tokens are minted or burned according to Dai price fluctuations, helping preserve the $1 USD target. The system operates entirely on-chain with stability maintained through protocol mechanics rather than external custodians.
Team and history
Maker was founded by Rune Christensen and launched on November 25, 2017. Dai officially went live on December 18, 2017.
