What is Midnight?
Launch and architecture
NIGHT launched as a Cardano native asset in December 2025. Midnight's mainnet genesis block was created on March 17, 2026. The network operates as a specialized Layer 1 alongside Cardano. Compact smart contracts combine public ledger state with private data kept on users' devices. Zero-knowledge proofs verify contract conditions without publishing the underlying private information.
Token and transaction resource
NIGHT has a total supply of 24 billion tokens. Its balances and transfers are unshielded. Registered NIGHT generates DUST, a renewable and non-transferable resource for paying transaction fees. DUST is consumed by execution and can decay when the supporting NIGHT balance falls. Glacier Drop and Scavenger Mine distributions introduced community allocations with a staged thawing schedule.
Consensus and governance
The initial network uses AURA proof of authority for block production and GRANDPA for finality. Its bootstrapping design provides for up to 13 trusted federated operators. Block rewards and NIGHT staking were unavailable at mainnet launch. Early governance uses a federated Council and Technical Authority to coordinate upgrades. Permissionless production and token-holder governance form part of the later decentralization roadmap.
