What is Mina Protocol?
Origin and proof system
Mina launched its mainnet on March 23, 2021. The protocol was incubated by o1Labs. Its technical paper was authored by Joseph Bonneau, Izaak Meckler, Vanishree Rao and Evan Shapiro. Recursive SNARKs compress verification of the chain's state and history. A verifier can check the resulting proof without processing every historical transaction. The compact proof is distinct from the full transaction archive. Mina's zkApps support application logic that is proved using zero-knowledge cryptography.
Network participation
Block producers participate through proof-of-stake consensus. MINA holders can delegate their stake to a producer. Delegation does not require moving the token balance into that producer's custody. SNARK workers provide proofs used by the network. Producers purchase those proofs through Mina's proof marketplace. MINA is the asset used for those payments and ordinary network transactions.
Monetary policy
The mainnet's initial distribution was 805,385,694 MINA. Additional tokens enter circulation through block rewards. MINA has no fixed supply ceiling. Each token is divisible to nine decimal places. Reward and inflation parameters are part of the protocol's economic design and can be revised through its upgrade process.
