What is MonaCoin?
Overview
MonaCoin is a payment-focused cryptocurrency designed as an alternative to Bitcoin and Litecoin for Japanese users. The network functions as a decentralized currency system enabling peer-to-peer transactions without intermediaries. The project maintains active development, implementing upgrades such as Segregated Witness and the Lightning Network to improve transaction efficiency.
How it works
MonaCoin operates as a proof-of-work blockchain using the Lyra2RE algorithm, which was adopted to provide fair mining opportunities across different hardware. The network includes the Dark Gravity Wave v3 difficulty adjustment mechanism. It is a hard fork of Litecoin that has incorporated scaling solutions including Segregated Witness and the Lightning Network.
Token and supply
MONA is the native asset of the MonaCoin blockchain with a total supply of approximately 105.1 million coins. The network launched without a premine, distributing new coins through proof-of-work mining rewards.
Team and history
MonaCoin was conceived in December 2013 and launched on January 1, 2014 under the pseudonymous identity Mr. Watanabe. The remainder of the development team operates anonymously.
