What is Nano?
Account chains
Each account maintains its own chain of signed balance updates. Sending funds records a debit on the sender’s chain. A receiving account separately records acceptance of the transfer. This structure is known as the block lattice. Representatives vote to resolve conflicts and confirm transactions. Account holders assign their balances’ voting weight to a representative. The mechanism is called Open Representative Voting. Delegation does not transfer ownership of the coins.
Distribution and incentives
The original faucet distributed coins to people solving CAPTCHAs. Distribution ended in October 2017. Undistributed genesis balances were sent to a burn address. The resulting supply was approximately 133.25 million nano. The protocol does not issue new coins as block rewards. Representatives receive no onchain voting subsidy. Users pay no transfer fees to the protocol. Lightweight proof of work helps limit transaction spam rather than mine additional currency.
