What is NEM?
Overview
NEM is a blockchain platform categorized as a payment solution. It was among the first networks to implement user-defined tokens (called mosaics), namespaces, multisignature accounts, and a peer-to-peer reputation system. The platform aimed to address limitations in earlier blockchain designs and remains actively traded in cryptocurrency markets.
How it works
NEM operates using Proof of Importance (PoI) consensus, a mechanism that rewards on-chain activity and is designed to discourage wealth concentration. The network's client, NIS, is built using Java. Current development efforts focus on a planned merger with the Symbol blockchain platform.
Token and supply
XEM is the native asset of the NEM blockchain. The total supply is approximately 9 billion XEM with no maximum supply cap specified. The token functions within the network's consensus and transaction framework.
Team and history
NEM launched on March 31, 2015, positioning itself as a pioneer that sought to improve upon existing blockchain designs at that time.
