What is NEO?
Origin and execution
Da Hongfei and Erik Zhang founded the project as Antshares in 2014. It was rebranded to Neo in 2017. The network supports programmable assets and smart contracts. Neo's virtual machine supports contracts compiled from several development languages. The N3 platform is the current-generation implementation of that infrastructure. Its consensus uses delegated Byzantine Fault Tolerance.
Governance and validation
NEO holders vote on network governance. Voting selects the council and contributes to the selection of consensus nodes. Those participants coordinate block validation under dBFT. Its finality model relies on agreement among the consensus participants rather than competitive proof-of-work mining. Governance can adjust supported network parameters. Participation incentives are connected to the dual-token system.
Token economics
The NEO supply is fixed at 100 million units. The smallest transferable unit is one NEO. It cannot be divided into fractional on-chain amounts. GAS is the divisible token used to pay for contract execution and other network resources. NEO holders can receive GAS under the network's generation and incentive rules. System fees paid in GAS are burned. These GAS issuance and burn mechanisms do not change the fixed NEO supply.
