What is Numeraire?
Models and data
Numerai distributes obfuscated financial datasets for machine-learning competitions. The datasets contain stock-related features and targets without exposing their original identities. Participants submit predictions generated by their models. Numerai scores these submissions against the competition's defined targets. NMR connects a model's forecasts with a token stake.
Staking and settlement
A stake can earn additional NMR for positive scores or lose NMR through burning for negative scores. Active-round funds remain committed until the round is settled. Numerai calculates scores and prepares settlement claims. Its onchain staking contracts verify claims using Merkle proofs. Allocation strategies can claim settled stakes and commit funds to later rounds. The score types and multipliers depend on the relevant tournament configuration.
Token supply
The NMR 2.0 contract upgrade in 2019 reduced the maximum token supply to 11 million. The upgraded token contract removed Numerai's ability to modify that cap through an administrator-controlled upgrade. Competition burns can reduce the remaining supply. NMR is an ERC-20 asset settled on Ethereum. Ethereum gas pays for token and staking-contract transactions. NMR's competition stake represents exposure to a submitted model's scoring outcome.
