What is Ocean Protocol?
Data access technology
Ocean uses data NFTs to represent control of published data services. Those NFTs can produce ERC-20 datatokens. Datatokens define access permissions for a service or dataset. Publishers can configure pricing, expiry and access restrictions. The underlying data does not need to be stored directly inside the token.
Private computation
Compute-to-Data moves an algorithm to the data environment. This lets applications process information without relocating the original dataset. Publishers can restrict which algorithms run. Ocean Nodes support the infrastructure for data and AI workflows. The ecosystem also includes prediction tools such as Predictoor.
Current token structure
The Ocean Protocol Foundation renounced control of the OCEAN contract in 2023. The token uses Ethereum's ERC-20 standard with eighteen decimal places. Current issuer materials identify an approximately 268 million supply cap. That supply is fully emitted. Ecosystem projects choose how to integrate OCEAN into their applications. Token uses can therefore differ between independently developed products.
