What is Ontology Gas?
Network functions
ONG pays the fees for transfers and smart-contract execution on Ontology. ONT provides the separate governance and staking asset. Network participants receive ONG through the protocol's emission and reward mechanisms. Ontology supports applications involving digital identity, data and decentralized finance. Its validator system uses stake-based participation within the VBFT consensus design.
2025 supply change
Ontology reduced ONG's maximum and total supply from one billion to 800 million following a community vote. The upgrade permanently burned 200 million ONG. It did not immediately reduce the tokens already in circulation. The revised release schedule extends distribution to maintain a steadier emission rate. These changes went live on mainnet in late 2025.
Liquidity and distribution
The new liquidity mechanism uses ONG to acquire ONT. The two assets are paired in liquidity pools. Burning the resulting LP tokens permanently locks their underlying liquidity. The program targets assets equivalent to 100 million ONG. ONG's transaction role remains distinct from ONT's staking and governance role.
