What is Ontology?
Origin and network
Ontology was founded by Li Jun in 2017. Its network uses Verifiable Byzantine Fault Tolerance, or VBFT. This combines proof of stake, verifiable randomness and Byzantine fault tolerance. Consensus contracts manage node membership and configuration. The network also supports smart contracts and an Ethereum-compatible execution environment.
Identity and token model
ONT ID lets users manage decentralized identities and verifiable credentials. Issuers can sign claims that other applications verify. The system separates the holder's identity from individual service accounts. Ontology's distributed data exchange framework supports the exchange of data and related claims. These tools connect blockchain applications with identity and reputation workflows. The total ONT supply is one billion tokens. ONT supports staking and network governance. ONG is the separate asset used to pay transaction and contract-execution fees. Staking ONT contributes to network participation and can earn ONG rewards. Changes to the dual-token economy are handled through network governance.
