What is Optimism?
Ethereum scaling infrastructure
Optimism developed an optimistic-rollup approach to scaling Ethereum. OP Mainnet executes transactions outside Ethereum while using it for settlement. Fault proofs allow invalid state claims to be challenged. Its execution environment supports Ethereum-compatible contracts and tools. The OP Stack packages that infrastructure for additional chains. The Superchain coordinates compatible chains built with the stack.
Token and governance
OP launched in May 2022 with an initial supply of 4,294,967,296 tokens. Allocations fund ecosystem development, contributors, investors and community programs. Vesting releases existing allocated tokens rather than creating equivalent new issuance. Token holders can delegate voting power in the Token House. Governance influences protocol upgrades and the allocation of shared resources. Transaction fees on OP Mainnet are paid in ETH.
Superchain revenue
A 2026 program directs half of incoming Superchain revenue toward OP buybacks. Purchases began using January revenue in the February execution cycle. Bought tokens return to the token treasury under governance oversight. The program does not automatically burn every purchased token.
