What is ORDI?
The BRC-20 experiment
The pseudonymous developer domo used ORDI to demonstrate the BRC-20 design. Its deployment specified a 21 million token maximum and a mint limit of 1,000 tokens per inscription. The original documentation records that ORDI reached its maximum supply. Public minting assigned balances to the first owner of each valid mint inscription. ORDI is transferred and traded as a fungible inscription-based asset.
Bitcoin data and balances
BRC-20 uses JSON inscriptions to express deploy, mint and transfer operations. Indexers read their order in Bitcoin's transaction history to calculate token balances. Inscription content is recorded in Taproot script-path spending data. Moving a BRC-20 balance requires a valid transfer inscription and its subsequent transfer to the recipient. Each transfer inscription can update balances only once. Bitcoin transactions store and transport the inscriptions, while BRC-20 rules determine their token-level meaning. Compatible wallets and indexers handle the inscription-specific accounting.
