What is PAX Gold?
Origin and gold allocation
Paxos launched PAX Gold on September 5, 2019. Each PAXG represents one fine troy ounce of London Good Delivery gold. The bullion is held in London vaults accredited by the London Bullion Market Association. Paxos maintains the reserves on a segregated basis for holders. Token balances can represent fractional ownership of a bullion bar.
Token transfers and supply
PAXG was first issued as an Ethereum token and is now available on additional supported blockchains. Its Ethereum units are divisible to eighteen decimal places. Issuance creates tokens corresponding to their underlying gold allocation. Redemption removes tokens as that allocation is released or sold. Wallet holders can inspect assigned bar details through Paxos's gold-allocation lookup.
Redemption and reporting
Approved customers can redeem through Paxos for dollars or eligible forms of gold. Physical delivery requires sufficient holdings for a full Good Delivery bar. Institutional customers can also arrange conversion into unallocated London gold. Paxos publishes monthly reserve information and independent accounting attestations. Token creation and redemption incur the issuer's applicable fees, separate from blockchain transaction costs.
