What is POL (ex-MATIC)?
Migration from MATIC
POL replaced MATIC as the gas and staking token of Polygon PoS on September 4, 2024. Balances on Polygon PoS were upgraded automatically. MATIC held on Ethereum can be converted through the migration contract at a 1:1 ratio. The POL contract implements the ERC-20 standard on Ethereum. It also supports permit approvals signed by token holders.
Network role
Polygon PoS is an Ethereum-compatible proof-of-stake blockchain. POL pays for transfers and smart-contract execution on this network. Validators stake tokens through contracts on Ethereum to help secure Polygon PoS. Token holders can delegate to validators and participate in staking rewards. POL's broader ecosystem design also includes community ownership and governance functions.
Supply and emissions
The initial POL supply was 10 billion tokens, matching the MATIC migration allocation. Its issuance model provides annual emissions of 2%. Half of those emissions support validator rewards and half fund the community treasury. Governance can adjust the emission model under the protocol's rules. The original 10 billion allocation therefore represents initial supply rather than a permanent maximum.
