What is Qtum?
Ledger and execution
Qtum records coin ownership through unspent transaction outputs. Its Account Abstraction Layer connects that ledger to the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Developers can deploy Solidity contracts without a special Qtum compiler. This abstraction links two execution models rather than implementing Ethereum's wallet account-abstraction standard. Contract execution and ordinary coin transfers share the same underlying blockchain.
Consensus and governance
Validators stake QTUM to produce blocks and receive network rewards. Qtum's FastLane network targets approximately 32-second block intervals. Its Decentralized Governance Protocol allows designated settings to be adjusted through contracts. Parameters such as block size can therefore change without requiring a hard fork for every adjustment. Upgrades that alter other consensus rules still require coordinated software changes.
Coin issuance
QTUM pays transaction fees and contract execution costs. Staking rewards introduce new coins under a halving schedule. The second halving occurred on November 30, 2025 and reduced the block reward to 0.25 QTUM. The next reward reduction is expected in 2029. The January 2026 protocol upgrade added BLS12-381 precompiles for applications using advanced cryptography. This capability supports zero-knowledge development without making every Qtum transaction a zero-knowledge transaction.
