What is Ripple USD?
Launch and issuer
Ripple USD became publicly available on December 17, 2024. Standard Custody & Trust Company, a Ripple subsidiary, is its issuer under a New York limited-purpose trust charter. The token targets dollar transfers, business payments and treasury operations. Approved institutional customers obtain newly minted RLUSD by depositing dollars. Redemption burns the returned tokens and settles fiat to a customer bank account.
Reserve structure
The reserve is maintained separately from the issuer's other assets. Permitted holdings include bank deposits, short-dated Treasury bills, government money market funds and overnight reverse repos. Outstanding RLUSD is intended to be matched by dollar-equivalent backing. Monthly independent attestations compare the circulating tokens with reserve assets. RLUSD carries a dollar redemption function rather than a claim on reserve investment income.
Blockchain representations
RLUSD initially launched on Ethereum and the XRP Ledger. Additional deployments include Base, Ink, Optimism, Unichain and the XRPL EVM sidechain. EVM versions implement ERC-20 contracts with separate proxy and implementation components. An upgrade can change contract logic while preserving the proxy used by applications. Ordinary holders obtain the token through supporting markets, while direct issuer transactions require institutional onboarding.
