What is Ronin?
Origins and network
Sky Mavis introduced Ronin to support Axie Infinity's blockchain activity. The network began operating as an Ethereum sidechain in 2021. RON launched as its token in 2022. Ronin subsequently expanded to games including Pixels and other independent titles. Its Ethereum Layer 2 migration was completed on 13 May 2026.
RON after the migration
Ronin retains RON for transaction fees rather than switching its users to ETH gas. The migration replaced the chain's former validator-based security model with OP Stack infrastructure. Existing game tokens and Katana liquidity pools continued through the transition. Legacy validator staking ended, with staked RON returned. The new model directs reward emissions to ecosystem builders.
Builder rewards and treasury
Proof of Distribution measures registered projects' contributions to Ronin activity. Builder scores determine rewards across approximately monthly seasons. The migration reduced annual reward emissions from 45 million to five million RON. Net sequencer income contributes to the Ronin Treasury after operating expenses. The treasury also receives a share of Ronin Marketplace fees.
