What is SATS (Ordinals)?
Inscription accounting
BRC-20 uses deploy, mint and transfer records. Those operations are encoded as inscription data. Indexers interpret valid records to calculate token balances. Minting must respect the parameters of the relevant deployment. Transfers require a valid transfer inscription before that inscription is sent to its destination. This accounting model differs from an Ethereum ERC-20 contract.
Token identity and trading units
SATS relies on Bitcoin transactions for inscription activity. Network transaction fees are paid in BTC. Its token balance is not a claim on an equivalent quantity of Bitcoin. Some exchanges use the 1000SATS trading denomination. One such trading unit represents one thousand SATS tokens. That denomination changes the quoted unit rather than creating a separate asset or additional token supply.
