What is Sonic?
Launch and execution
Sonic's mainnet launched on December 18, 2024. It developed from the Fantom ecosystem into a separate network with the S asset. Existing FTM holders received a one-for-one upgrade path to S. The chain supports Solidity and Vyper applications through EVM compatibility. Its native gateway connects supported assets between Sonic and Ethereum.
Staking and fees
S pays for transfers and contract execution on Sonic. Validators stake the asset to participate in network security. Holders can delegate to validators and receive the applicable rewards. Withdrawals from staking have a fourteen-day waiting period. Validator penalties can affect delegated balances. Governance uses staked tokens to direct supported network decisions.
Issuance programs
Sonic migrated the remaining Opera block-reward allocation to fund its initial four years of validator rewards. Separate issuance supports ecosystem growth, airdrops and approved institutional initiatives. The ongoing-growth program provides 47,625,000 S annually for six years. Unused tokens from that annual program are designated for burning. Airdrop rules also burn part of an allocation when users claim before full maturation. S therefore has changing supply rather than an immutable ceiling equal to the old FTM issuance.
