The stated total supply is one billion RARE. The initial airdrop took place in August 2021. Eligibility came from earlier activity minting or purchasing artwork on SuperRare. Unclaimed airdrop tokens returned to the DAO treasury. RARE uses an Ethereum token contract.
Art and governance
SuperRare focuses on digital art represented by NFTs. RARE holders can participate in decisions affecting the platform. Governance discussions take place through its forum and improvement proposals. Community voting uses Snapshot for eligible proposals. Curation and marketplace parameters are part of the governance scope.
Economic role
Platform commissions flow to a community treasury governed by token holders. RARE can also serve as marketplace currency. Its ecosystem includes staking-based reward mechanisms. Ownership of RARE remains separate from ownership of an individual artwork NFT. The token's role is therefore platform participation rather than a universal licence to the art listed for sale.
