What is Symbol?
Overview
Symbol is a blockchain platform designed as a successor to NEM, offering an alternative to EVM-based smart contract platforms. The network supports decentralized applications including bounty platforms, loyalty programs, games, content storage services, and NFT marketplaces. Its user community is concentrated in Asia, particularly Japan and Korea, where it maintains active engagement across social channels.
How it works
Symbol operates as a Layer 1 blockchain using a proof-of-stake-plus consensus mechanism. The network incorporates features such as rule-based tokens called mosaics, namespace systems, multisignature accounts, and aggregate transactions. Its client, Catapult, is implemented in C++.
Token and supply
XYM is the native asset of the Symbol blockchain. The maximum and total supply are each approximately 9 billion tokens. The material does not specify token distribution mechanisms, staking rewards, or burn processes.
History
Symbol launched in March 2021. In November 2021, a pseudonymous development team initiated Cyprus, a hard fork intended to advance the network toward omnichain architecture using zero-knowledge scaling technology.
