What is Terra Luna Classic?
Original chain and transition
The original Terra network launched in April 2019. Terraform Labs developed it as infrastructure for programmable payments and algorithmic stablecoins. Its native asset was originally called LUNA. The UST stablecoin mechanism failed in May 2022. Conversions through that mechanism expanded the native token's supply dramatically. The continuing original chain became Terra Classic and its asset became LUNC. The later Terra network and its LUNA token are separate assets.
Consensus, utility and supply
Terra Classic uses the Cosmos SDK and Tendermint-based consensus. Validators secure the chain through delegated proof of stake. LUNC is used for staking, transaction fees and governance. CosmWasm supports smart contracts on the network. Validators and community developers maintain the continuing chain. Supply reduction includes onchain burn-tax mechanisms and voluntary burns. Tax parameters are set through the chain's governance and consensus rules. These burns do not restore the original algorithmic stablecoin design or create a fixed one-dollar value for LUNC.
