What is TerraClassicUSD?
The original algorithmic design
TerraUSD originally sought dollar stability through exchanges with LUNA. The mechanism expanded or contracted supply through minting and burning. It relied on market incentives rather than a dollar reserve account. The peg failed during the May 2022 crisis. The original blockchain continued under the Terra Classic name. Its former LUNA became LUNC. TerraUSD became TerraClassicUSD, commonly abbreviated USTC. These renamings preserved the existing chain's balances.
A legacy native denomination
Terra's migration instructions disabled the original market-swap mechanism. The separate new Terra chain launched without Terra stablecoins. USTC consequently remains an asset of the Classic ecosystem. Its native denomination is uusd. Wallets and applications can transfer that balance onchain. LUNC performs Classic's staking and governance roles. USTC ownership is separate from those validator rights. Outstanding supply reflects the legacy issuance history and later burns. The token has no restored one-dollar redemption mechanism established by its name.
