What is The Graph?
Origins and data model
Yaniv Tal, Brandon Ramirez and Jannis Pohlmann developed The Graph. Its decentralized network launched in December 2020. Developers describe the blockchain data they need through subgraphs. Indexers process that data into queryable datasets. Applications request those datasets using GraphQL. The service supports wallets, decentralized applications and analytics systems.
Participants and staking
Indexers stake GRT and earn query fees plus indexing rewards. Their stake can be slashed for incorrect indexing or malicious service. Curators use GRT to signal useful subgraphs. Delegators assign GRT to indexers and share in the resulting income. The live Graph Horizon architecture provisions stake separately for individual data services. Horizon also removed the former delegation tax.
Token issuance and services
The network began with ten billion GRT. Indexing rewards are funded by protocol issuance targeting three percent annually. Fee burns and other protocol sinks offset part of that issuance. GRT therefore has an expanding issuance model rather than a ten-billion hard cap. Horizon broadens the staking infrastructure beyond the original subgraph service.
