What is Gram (prev. Toncoin)?
Development and identity
Pavel and Nikolai Durov began developing TON with Telegram's team in 2018. After Telegram discontinued its involvement in 2020, independent developers continued the open-source project. The network became known as The Open Network. Its native currency was subsequently called Toncoin before adopting the Gram name in 2026. The token's name changed while the blockchain retained the TON identity.
Sharding and execution
TON coordinates its architecture through a masterchain and workchains. Shardchains divide account processing and can split or merge as demand changes. Contracts communicate through asynchronous messages rather than synchronous calls across the whole network. Contract code executes inside the TON Virtual Machine. Proof-of-stake validators use Catchain 2.0, based on Simplex consensus, to agree on blocks.
Supply and applications
The initial coin supply was five billion, with subsequent issuance rewarding validators. Gram pays for computation, persistent storage and network message handling. Validators commit stake, and pool contracts let other holders contribute to validation. Fungible application tokens use TON's separate jetton standard. Telegram integrations use the network for collectible usernames, tokenized gifts, payments and advertising revenue distributions.
