What is Tornado Cash?
Private transfers
The classic contracts accept deposits into fixed-denomination pools. A deposit creates a commitment derived from secret information. Commitments are recorded in a Merkle tree. A withdrawal supplies a zero-knowledge proof that an eligible deposit exists. A nullifier prevents that deposit from being withdrawn twice. The proof does not need to reveal which recorded commitment belongs to the withdrawing user.
Governance and relayers
TORN holders can lock tokens to participate in governance. Proposals can execute approved changes through the governance system's contracts. Governance authority depends on the permissions of the relevant component. The classic deposit pools are immutable, so voting does not make their original contracts freely upgradeable. Relayers can submit withdrawals for users who do not fund a fresh address directly. The protocol uses zk-SNARK verification rather than TORN-based mining. TORN participation is separate from the deposits held in a privacy pool.
