What is UMA?
Optimistic verification
UMA allows applications to bring verifiable information onchain. An optimistic oracle accepts a proposed answer or assertion unless someone challenges it. A challenge sends the disagreement into a dispute process. This approach avoids requiring a tokenholder vote for every request. Applications specify the question and the conditions for its resolution.
Oracle versions
OOv2 supports requests answered by third-party proposers. OOv3 lets an application submit its own assertion with defined parameters. Both versions use a challenge period. Their integrations include prediction markets, insurance and crosschain infrastructure. The approved identifier system defines how particular questions should be interpreted.
Tokenholder decisions
UMA holders participate in dispute resolution and protocol governance. Voters determine answers to contested requests. Honest participation earns token rewards under the voting system. Improvement proposals describe proposed changes to the ecosystem. The DAO can also approve treasury actions. These functions connect the token with oracle security rather than transaction gas.
