What is USD1?
Issuance
USD1 was introduced in March 2025 through a collaboration between World Liberty Financial and BitGo. It is intended for dollar payments, settlement and transfers between financial applications. World Liberty Financial owns the brand and provides associated services. BitGo issues the tokens and handles initial purchases and redemptions. Direct issuance requires an approved BitGo account.
Dollar reserves
Each USD1 is designed to represent one US dollar. Its backing consists of cash, US government money market funds and other cash equivalents maintained by BitGo. Tokens enter circulation through minting and leave through redemption and burning. This produces a variable supply rather than a predetermined mining cap. Monthly attestations report on the reserves, while a separate Chainlink-based dashboard compares reported backing with supply across supported chains.
Token infrastructure
USD1 uses standard token contracts on several networks, including Ethereum, BNB Chain, Solana and TRON. Its Ethereum representation follows ERC-20, while Solana uses SPL tokens. Supported cross-chain transfers use Chainlink CCIP. Reserve income belongs to BitGo and affiliated World Liberty Financial entities under their agreements, rather than automatically accruing to token holders. Eligible BitGo customers can redeem directly for dollars; other holders use supporting exchanges or custodians under those services' terms.
