What is Walrus?
Data storage
Walrus stores unstructured files as blobs distributed across independent storage operators. Applications can publish documents, images, video and other binary data. Encoded fragments allow the system to reconstruct data even when many nodes are unavailable. Storage capacity and stored blobs have corresponding objects on Sui. Smart contracts can use these objects to manage the data's availability period.
Payments and delegation
WAL pays for reserved storage and blob-write operations. SUI separately covers the gas required for the associated Sui transactions. Storage payments enter a fund and are distributed across the epochs covered by the reservation. Node performance affects the rewards paid from that fund. WAL holders can delegate tokens to storage nodes and receive part of the fees they earn.
Supply and burns
The launch tokenomics set a maximum allocation of five billion WAL. Delegated staking determines committee participation and the assignment of storage shards. At epoch changes, the protocol burns 3% of the rewards before distributing the remainder. Slashing a faulty operator burns its accumulated commission rather than a delegator's principal. Deleting a blob neither burns the user's WAL nor refunds the storage payment. Burning a blob's Sui object instead relates to a SUI storage rebate.
