What is Wormhole?
Cross-chain protocol
Wormhole began in October 2020 as infrastructure for communication between blockchains. Its contracts support asset transfers, messages and other cross-chain application data. A Guardian network observes events and signs attestations. The final message requires signatures from 13 of 19 Guardians. Receiving contracts check those signatures before processing the message. Some networks use delegated observation before the canonical signatures are collected.
W token
W was distributed in April 2024. Maximum supply is ten billion tokens. Native ERC-20 and Solana SPL representations use Wormhole's Native Token Transfers standard. Holders can stake for governance participation. Token allocations fund community programs, development and protocol contributors. Holding W is distinct from operating a Guardian node.
Distribution changes
The September 2025 W 2.0 update replaced several annual cliffs with unlocks every two weeks. The revised schedule began on October 3, 2025. Investor and Guardian allocations received an extended schedule running to October 2028. The upgrade also described a reserve funded by protocol activity and variable governance rewards. Those rewards use existing supply and protocol revenue, with no increase to the ten-billion-token cap.
