What is Zama?
Origin and technology
Zama was founded in 2020 by Rand Hindi and Pascal Paillier. The token launched on February 2, 2026. Its protocol uses Fully Homomorphic Encryption to process data without first exposing the plaintext. Smart contracts determine which parties can decrypt particular results. FHE coprocessors perform the encrypted computations. A threshold key-management system distributes decryption responsibility across multiple operators. Zero-knowledge proofs check that users have constructed their encrypted inputs correctly.
Operator economy
ZAMA pays for protocol functions including encryption and decryption services. The protocol's operators and delegators stake tokens to participate in its security system. Active operators include key-management nodes and FHE coprocessors. Token holders can delegate to selected operators and receive a share of rewards. The fee design quotes service costs in dollar terms and converts those costs into ZAMA. Fees are burned when paid. Operator and staking rewards are supplied through scheduled token minting. This creates a burn-and-mint economy rather than a permanently fixed supply. Zama's confidentiality layer operates alongside host-chain transaction rules rather than replacing their consensus.
