What is ZAR Universal?
Overview
ZARU is a single-currency stablecoin designed for institutional-grade digital settlement in Africa. It serves financial institutions, payment service providers, fintechs, and participants in cross-border commerce. The token is issued by BlockTower South Africa (Pty) Ltd, a Financial Services Provider licensed by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA).
How it works
ZARU operates on Solana, Ethereum, Base, and Arc blockchains, allowing deployment across multiple networks. Users can interact with the stablecoin on any of these chains for payments and settlement purposes.
Peg and backing
Each ZARU token maintains a 1:1 peg to the South African rand through full backing by rand-denominated reserves held in segregated accounts at Standard Bank of South Africa. Reserve management is overseen by Sanlam Specialised Asset Manager as the asset-liability manager. Monthly independent attestations of reserves are conducted by Moore Johannesburg Inc. and made publicly available.
