What is Zcash?
Origin and use
Zcash launched on 28 October 2016, developed by a team led by Zooko Wilcox. The project grew from Bitcoin's codebase and earlier Zerocash research. ZEC is used for payments and transaction fees, with transparent and shielded transfer options.
Technology and supply
Equihash Proof of Work secures the network. Shielded transactions use zero-knowledge proofs to conceal senders, recipients and amounts while proving validity. Maximum supply is 21 million ZEC. Mining subsidies halve approximately every four years, following the protocol's issuance schedule.
