What is ZERA?
Overview
ZERA allows users to deposit supported assets like USDC, USDT, and SOL into a protocol, receiving cryptographic notes that can be transferred privately—even offline—before withdrawal back to the original asset. The system maintains a unified anonymity set across all deposits, enabling cash-like privacy while preserving transparent reserve backing. Optional relayers can submit withdrawals on behalf of users, further obscuring the connection between private activity and network transactions.
How it works
The protocol uses Pedersen commitments to record values and unique nullifiers to prevent double-spending while hiding transaction linkage. Zero-knowledge SNARK proofs allow validators to confirm transaction correctness without accessing sender, receiver, or amount information. Users retain full control of their keys and notes; the direct-deposit architecture maintains unified liquidity without requiring wrapped assets or AMM routing.
Token and supply
ZERA has a maximum supply of 999.4 million tokens. The token accrues value through programmatic burns tied to protocol volume—a portion of transaction activity triggers automatic token supply reduction, aligning token economics with adoption rather than direct transaction fees. This design avoids collecting explicit protocol fees while creating supply reduction incentives tied to usage growth.
Team and history
ZERA was founded by Hayden 'Dax' Porter, a former MetaMask engineer. Zera Labs was established in 2025, expanding the original vision into a privacy-preserving cash layer and extensible zero-knowledge ecosystem.
