What is ZKsync?
Developer and token launch
Matter Labs developed ZKsync and remains a core engineering contributor. Its co-founders include Alex Gluchowski. The ZK token was introduced in June 2024. Approximately two-thirds of its allocation went to community-directed programs. The initial user and contributor airdrop represented 17.5% of the overall allocation.
Execution and verification
ZKsync chains execute transactions outside Ethereum and use validity proofs to establish correct state changes. ZK Stack provides infrastructure for deploying chains with configurable operating parameters. ZKsync's account abstraction supports programmable wallets and paymasters. The 2025 EVM Interpreter upgrade added execution support for standard EVM bytecode. Gateway provides an optional shared aggregation layer. The Atlas upgrade introduced ZKsync OS and the Airbender proving system.
Governance and issuance
ZK holders delegate voting power within ZK Nation's governance system. Onchain governance controls eligible protocol upgrades and token-program decisions. Investor and team allocations use a release schedule extending through June 2028. A November 2025 contract upgrade made the 21-billion-token ceiling explicit. It also enabled holders to destroy their own ZK through permissionless burning.
